Oregano

Happy February and welcome back! This month we will be learning more about a very common household herb. If not for you, then certainly for all Italians (and it’s not basil.) This powerhouse is oregano. Mostly used in the culinary world and kind of used in the medicinal world but today we’re going to uncover how this herb can heal you while tasting delicious.

Oregano’s rich medicinal history can be dated back to 3000BC. It was first used by the Assyrian Empire and then later found in ancient Greek and Roman cultures for mainly respiratory and digestive issues, but this plant holds so much more than you think. From being given to us from goddess for joy and prosperity to being used in gynecology this herb has a crazy story. Now that we know that the key antioxidant compounds are carvacrol, thymol, and various flavonoids that can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Its antibacterial properties make it a great potential natural remedy; it’s anti-inflammatory properties could also be beneficial for dealing with symptoms due to chronic inflammation. The antimicrobial properties may also help with gut health. There’s also the potential antifungal & antiviral activity but that’s beyond the scope of today’s conversation.

The best ways to use oregano for its full potential are oil/tincture and tea. Yes, I know oregano tea sounds weird but it’s amazing for most things and cramps! As a tea or oil, it can help fight just about the same thing, the oil will act faster and is typically more concentrated. Amazing for respiratory infections, inflammatory diseases, colds, flus and to alleviate digestive issues. This herb has a long history worth exploring, even if just out of interest. But remember to do your own research to make sure oregano is safe for you.
